"KSH. 100 Million Wasted: Why Kenyan Hospitals Are Buying Equipment That Never Gets Used—And How FREMA Is Fixing It"
According to Auditor General Nancy Gathungu's 2025 report, medical equipment worth over Sh100 million remains unused across multiple counties. Kilifi County received a Sh33.49 million incinerator in March 2024—it sat idle for seven months. Kitui County received a Sh70 million X-ray machine in 2017—it is still in its box in 2024. Nakuru County has four completed health projects worth Sh30.2 million lying idle due to lack of equipment and generators.
Thirty-six hospitals were found with idle equipment and vehicles lying unused.
And when equipment does work? It breaks down—with devastating consequences.
